A Different Kind of Rocky Road

Debbie Gustafson of Debbie’s Dolls remembers her college course with Dick Ojakangas as her professor at University of Minnesota – Duluth. “He made geology interesting and fun. I enjoyed that course,” says Debbie.

Next Saturday, October 12, is a local opportunity to hear Dick Ojakangas, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Geological Sciences, UMD make the roadside geology of Minnesota interesting and fun for you. Don’t let the bucolic feel of your drives across the prairie fool you – it’s a 3,500 million-year history filled with volcanoes erupting, oceans transgressing and retreating, mountains being built, then eroded, 12, 034 lakes being formed. (Yes, when Minnesotans say, “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” we are being modest.)

Dick will present a fully illustrated lecture on the geology of Minnesota. Afterwards, he will be selling and signing copies of his book, Roadside Geology of Minnesota, an informative and well illustrated guide to the state. All of the major highways have detailed road guides (42 total) and descriptions of many of Minnesota’s parks are included. The 355-page guide has geological examples from each of four regions (East, Northwest/Central, Southwest, and Southeast) along with regional introductions.
